Introduction
I have previously written an article on the problems I have had with the Klipsch Promedia Ultra 2.0 speakers. The problem with them is the Volume POT being generally of a low quality. Many users have experienced this problem, and the people I know who own them have had about an 80% failure rate within 12 months. If you take the time to read the Klipsch Forums, you will see that this is a really common problem. Not what you would call a good track record. Not wanting to discard a $200 pair of speakers, I set about trying to repair the Volume POT, and I have attached some simple pictures and instructions to guide you through the process.
Step 1 is to go and buy yourself a can of cleaning solvent (deoxit or the like), and a long thin shafted philips head screw driver as the screws are deeply recessed in the speaker housing

Step 2 – Remove the foam speaker cover. This just pops right off as the cover clips into the screw holes.

Step 3 – Remove the Faceplate screws. There are 10 screws in the unit to remove, as shown below on the red circles. They are not hard to miss, but 10 is a lot of screws. The screws are quite long also, so make sure to screw them all the way out.

Step 4 – Remove the Actual faceplate. The faceplate pulls off easily, but with the cabling keeping it attached, it is best to lay the speaker on it’s side. Then you can lay the faceplate on the table, like in the photo below. As you can see there is plenty of Cotton wool in the speakers. The volume control is the top knob in this diagram.

Step 5 – Pull off the plastic cover to the Volume knob. I don’t think this needs a photo, just pull it straight off.
Step 6 – Spray the volume pot with the contact cleaner. I have marked below where I applied the contact cleaner. Just at the point where the thread reaches the nut. Once you have applied the contact cleaner you want to use the volume know in its full rang, rotating in both directions about 10 times. this will ensure that the contact cleaner cleans up the pot. Once you have done this, let it sit for about 20 minutes to dry.

Step 7 – Reassemble.
If anyone has had success with this, please let me know.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI got an email from a guy called Ash that said he used Braun Shaver celaner on his and it worked also. Not sure what the ingredients in it are, or the long term value, but if you are interested in experimenting you could give that a try also.
