For those of you that have heard of Klipsch, you will realise that they have a great reputation for producing high quality speakers. After hearing rave reviews of their quality, I went out and bought myself a pair of the Promedia Ultra 2.0 speakers. Historically I have had an amplifier with 5.1 speakers, but apartment living has reduced my space, so 2.0 is enough to hook up to my computer and play WoW and listen to mp3′s.
I have had these speakers for just over a year, having bought them from Streetwise. About a week before the warranty expired the sound started to randomly cut out. Turn them off again and on again and they return to normal. A few weeks of trouble shooting, and I was confident that it was definitely a fault. Unfortunately, Klipsch won’t replace them as they are out of warranty. After much confusion I got referred to an Australian repairer. The repair price is $139 (they only cost $199) and the “trade-in” is $129. Unfortunately I am not a fan of throwing good money after bad.
I also think this problem is not “isolated”. A friend of mine at work has two pairs, both exhibit the same problem. So then i started to dig for more. When you browse the web for people with problems, they crop up all over the place, including in the klipsch forums.

And the best comment is from Sue here
“Behind the volume control knob there is a pot switch for the volume control. I have a can of Radio Shack contact/control cleaner and lubricant and sprayed the pot switch. I then turned the volume control on and off several times to lubricate it. It has been working fine every since. I’m thinking that the pot gets dirty and doesn’t make a good contact. Like I said, I had nothing to lose since my speakers were out of warranty. Good luck. I do believe it is a design fault. “
I would like to ask that anyone who has had problems with these speakers please drop me a comment, or email me starsky at bluecouch dot com dot au because I want to see how many people have this problem. If we get enough people with these problems, we can try and apply some pressure to Klipsch to get these speakers fixed, for all of us.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackExact same problem here. Bought the Promedia Ultra 2.0s (1 year, 11 months ago) because of Klipsch reputation. Have 20 year old Klipsch Hereseys on main stereo system and my bro has 30 year old Klipsch Cornwalls . On both pairs, excellent sound, no problems.
Thanks for providing this advice and these links. Will try Sue’s suggestion but one would think Klipsch would offer free repair on a well established design/manufacturing defect despite term of warranty.
yeah you would think they would help wouldn’t you jackster. I gave mine the lubrication treatment twice now, but I find I have to do it every 3 months or so. I have given up and bought a pair of high end altec lansing speakers (which I am impressed with so far). Let’s see hwo they handle the long haul.
So for now my Klipsch speakers are gathering dust in a cupboard.

I have the same problem, although my problem began afterI quit leaving the speakers on all the time. To save energy, I began turning the speakers off when my computer went to sleep. Then they began to cut out; could get them going again by turning them off and then on. So I left them on; they were fine for a few months, and now cut out randomly. Usually a few hours between cut outs, but yesterday it was only a few minutes between cut outs. Today they’re working ok. I did open them up today, but quickly realized there was nothing I could adjust. I’ll try the trick suggested by Sue above. Thanks for posting that comment.
